In celebration of Broadway’s biggest event of the year, we’re looking at some of the recent winners of the Tony Awards. The Tony Awards will be on June 16th on CBS.

The Tony Awards are named after Antoinette Perry who was the leader of the American Theater Wing during World War II. The first award ceremony was held on April 6, 1947 and 11 Tonys were given out which included Helen Hayes, Arthur Miller, and Ingrid Bergman.  Twenty years later in 1967, the awards were shown on television for the first time. The Tonys became known as one of the finest award shows in the 60s and 70s as well as the first award show to have live performances. In 2020, there was no award show due to the pandemic. The following year, a special ceremony was held in September to honor the winners from 2020. Make sure to tune into the show on June 16th to catch performances from this year’s nominees.
